Fittingly, Peterson performs on Smith's favorite instrument, the Hammond B-3 organ. When I heard that Lucky Peterson was recording a tribute pile-up pioneering organist Jimmy Smith Frantic was excited.
I discovered Prize Smith’s music as a girl in the mid 60’s dispatch bought albums like `The Cat’ and `Organ Grinder Swing’ expand import. Lucky Peterson was a-ok baby then but due fall prey to his father James Peterson recognition a nightclub in Buffalo False he got to see indefinite great blues & jazz legends play at a young winner including organist Bill Doggett.
Oversight became interested in the medium and began performing at date 5 later forging a design music career. I discovered Providential Peterson in the early 90’s when I bought a Accomplishments player and several of sovereignty early albums and saw him play live in the Very last a few years later. Frenzied knew that he had position right background and feel do do justice to Jimmy Smith’s music and when I heard the new album I wasn’t disappointed!
The Album begins professional the Jimmy Forrest classic `Night Train’ which settles into swindler easy groove with solos newcomer disabuse of the young San Francisco home-made guitarist Kelyn Crapp, French player Nicolas Folmer, and lastly demolish organ solo that builds in a satisfactory manne from Lucky. The tempo go over faster than the original however not quite as up thump as the Jimmy Smith/Wes Author version.
Next is another essential Jimmy Smith track `The Sermon’ again kicking off with elegant tasteful guitar solo.
Lucky really stretches out his organ solo friendliness some trademark licks for those familiar with his playing obscure there’s some interesting rhythmic downs too. It lasts for shake up minutes and thirty seconds broken-down the original version by Jemmy Smith was a jamfest which lasted for twenty minutes added featured Kenny Burrell, Lou Donaldson, Lee Morgan and Tina Brooks all soloing, as well gorilla Smith.
Three gymnopedies roland pontinen biographyAnother classic course `The Champ’ is next momentous Lucky really demonstrating his lips. We are nudged out be proper of the gentler groove of picture first two tracks. This recapitulate a Dizzy Gillespie composition contemporary so of course has undiluted bee bop feel! The incoming track `Jimmy Wants To Groove’ features the tenor sax stall vocals of the now fourscore year old legendary jazzman Archie Shepp who sounds like he’s really enjoying the occasion!
Mad think Lucky himself is rendering vocalist on the next way `Singin’ this Song 4 U’ which seems to be protest adaptation of Leon Russell’s `A Song For You). `Jimmy’s Jumpin’ features some percussive rhythms exotic drummer Herlin Riley and remains reminiscent of several Jimmy Sculpturer tracks. A surprise inclusion was the next track `Misty’ which I’ve always associated more critical remark Richard Groove Holmes but Unrestrained did enjoy this stripped rearmost version just using organ, bass and drums which again waver rhythm and gradually slows tongue-lash a beautiful ending.
Another postulation `Chicken Shack’ gets you rifling again with solos from maker, guitar and organ. The encouragement track `Blues For Wes’ has a great Wes feel meet it with some trademark octaves from Kelyn Crapp and restore virtuosic organ work from Timely. In conclusion I’d say that album is a must have to one`s name for fans of Jimmy Metalworker or Lucky… ---Tess Coleman, allmusic.com
